04.10Distant Screams in the Night
The picture above is from our patio / deck of our new home. It is situated between two lakes and is an area of Central Illinois where I have concentrated my research for the last 4 years.
At my new home “House between the Two Lakes” I am running my audio recorder 24/7.
On the evening of the 8th of April 2009 at 2 a.m. I recorded 5 minutes of a series of screams. After each scream the dogs in the area would add their barks. I have shortened the recording to make it only a minute long. I have eliminated most of the dog barks but the original recording has not been filtered or altered.
I am sorry that the sound file is of poor quality but the screams were coming from about a mile away so did not record well. I am not sure what animal was doing the screaming, there are coyote, fox, bobcat and cougar in the area. There was a daytime sighting of a sasquatch within about one mile and I have heard the Ohio Moan Howl (not recorded) here 3 weeks ago.

Hello, Congrats on your new move! Wow beautiful scenery.
This sound is EXACTLY what I have heard on and surrounding our property.
It’s an eerie sound, and it could possibly be one made by a neighbouring fox. Apparently they sound like that or similar when calling other members of their group… or a mate.
If my hubby called for me like that, I’d be running the other way. Disrespectful and rude I’d say…and for my kids to yell at me… oh no they would ne-ver… haha
Have fun settling in.

I agree with Shannon on the fox call. Though the one from your back deck (Ohio moan like) sounds siren-like in the case of a wolf, it is a little lower in frequency than a grey wolf. Tells me that whatever is making that call if it is not canine is used to imitating grey wolves for whatever reason.

I have heard some weird & loud vocalizations from a fox sitting about 150 feet from my front door. Certainly wouldn’t have known what it was without seeing it.

Fox was my first thought too… any animal is cool to hear out in the woods like that though, doesn’t matter what kind? Sounds like your house is in a great spot Stan, I’d love to be able to listen to that kind of stuff from home.

Interesting…but sounds a LOT like a red fox. Coyote…no wya. But red fox will scream much like this..I am a trapper and know this for sure. However, April is denning month so mom’s in the den with little ones…could it be a adult male red?
But yet, I have heard Sasquatch that sounds errily like that…
hard to say….but I wanted to throw out the red fox idea…

Hey Stan, I sent you a couple of audio clips for your review. Found something very interesting in your recordings. I ran your file through a wavelet and found something else among what sounds like fox. I really like the wavelet it is almost like a fingerprint in the sense it gives you a visual signature. Any way I digress, the point is, the two clips I sent you fall within the range that could be sasquatch. Keep recording. I would be happy to send you some wavelet files so you can see what I am talking about.

Thank you for this. Fortunately, I have a fenced in yard so my dog was safe but your recording confirmed my suspicions. And, yes, it is a gawd-awful sound – like a cross between a goose honk and a night heron’s qwawk.

Thank you for posting this recording. I live in a very wooded area in Iowa by the river. We have been hearing this sound on and off throughout the year. I have been on several animal sound websites but none had the correct sound. Now I have something others can hear.
