Ever since the discovery of the bigfoot costume head (note: it’s not a mask since it’s worn on top of the wearer’s head — the wearer has eye holes in the neck of the costume) it has been evident that the bigfoot body was a hoax. Yet the story continues on toward its inevitable crash like some twisted Shakespearean tradi-comedy.
This is not the first time Biscardi has been involved in bringing spurious evidence to the public, and unless we are extremely lucky, it won’t be the last. In 2005 Biscardi announced on Coast to Coast with George Noory that he had a pair of bigfoot trapped in a cave. Less than a year later, Biscardi announced to the world that he had in his possession the hand of bigfoot. (Coincidentally, in that event, as in this one, Biscardi mischaracterized the results of the DNA testing.) Both announcements turned out to be false. We should not be surprised that now, in 2008, he’s done the same thing again. Like clockwork Biscardi lurches across our stage, a deranged Falstaff uttering outrageous falsehoods in his own Summer-Shakespeare farce. And each time, he’s able to get public attention. How does this happen? Someone always gives Biscardi an in.
This time, according to Loren Coleman at Cryptomundo, Coleman gave the initial reports his time and attention because the GA boys had been burning his books and being mean to him. He paints his early work on the story as a super double psych-out– make Biscardi and the boys think that Coleman had bought into their tale so that the pictures could come out and then everyone could see what a hoax it was. If this is actually true (and I don’t believe it), then what Coleman has done is allow the hoax to snowball into a huge national audience in order to protect himself from the laughable and, until Friday, inconsequential “mean” boys from Georgia. Wow, super plan, Loren!
Welcome to Sasquatch Summer Theatre..
NOTE: The link to Coleman’s statement at Cryptomundo doesn’t come up the same for me anymore. Either the server is hosed or the post has been changed.
EXTRA NOTE OF SYMPATHY AND COMPASSION: That’s a satirical lead-in, but seriously, Loren Coleman’s part in this is part of the story, but not the main part of the story. Tom Biscardi was and is the driver of this. I’m sure Loren feels terrible about how things have turned out. All things considered, Loren does a good job keeping people properly focused in all things cryptozoological through his postings at Cryptomundo. If “mistakes were made” in this grand fiasco, one way or another, Idon’t think it ought to do too much harm to Loren’s reputation. After all, he’s got quitea body of work to back him up. And he wasn’t the only one to prop up the story at thebeginning — in fact, as you may know, I did it too. (Of course, I don’t have quite theaudience Cryptomundo has..)
AN EMAIL GOING AROUND (the author does not specify whether its for attribution ornot so I’ll keep the sender’s name anonymous for now) claims there will be somekind of FOXNews story on new developments at 3:30pm. I’m sure this will be extraspecial good and worth all of our attention, but I’m staining my front porch today, so Iwon’t be able to follow along. If/when something comes of it, perhaps some of youcould kindly post about it in the comments.
