Illinois Bigfoot Research
Illinois has a long history of bigfoot-like creatures. The earliest reference that I am able to find is an article in the Decatur, Illinois Saturday Herald newspaper dated 8 Sep 1883 about a wildman near Centreville, St. Clair County, Illinois.
As the years have gone by there have been periodic reports and scares in different parts of the state. Probably the most famous stories were Cohomo of the E. Pekin, Illinois area in 1972, Big Muddy Monster near Murphysboro, Illinois in 1973 and the Dutch Harbor Monster in 1968. It is my opinion that after about 1980 as these stories started going into the tabloids that the main-stream newspapers no longer would report on the sightings.
However, with an increase of TV documentaries on the subject there has been an increased amount of newspaper coverage. The Chicago Tribune and The Ottawa Daily Times carried articles during the summer and fall of 2005 concerning several sightings in the Seneca, Illinois area.
I am an investigator with the BFRO. To report a bigfoot sighting please fill out a Sighting Report Form . If you would like me to be the investigator please type in Stan Courtney at the bottom of the form.
The following information is provided by the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization, the BFRO. To see each county’s reports click on the county name.

Hi Stan,
I have enjoyed your website and have recently become interested in this bigfoot mystery. Approximately what part of Illinois are you located? I am located in the western suburbs of Chicago.
Thanks,
John

Hi John,
Although I live near Springfield, I have done extensive research all over the state of Illinois. Although most out-of-staters consider Illinois to be corn & soybeans it is ranked # 11 for bigfoot reports by the BFRO.

Hi, Stan:
I live in Gaithersburg, Maryland but I was born and raised in Bloomington, IL. I found your site and I just thought I’d give a friendly shout-out to a fellow Lincoln-Lander, and wish you the best of luck in your research! ^_^
Take care.

I was driving on dupont road in seneca il. when I heard
a loud woo!.. woo!woo!…sound that came from the south side of the road I was driving westbound. Then it sounded like the same sound came from the opposite side of the road in response. It was rather high pitched. I dont know of any birds that make that type of call that loud. I had my window open and it was so loud and sounded so close, I actually jumped when I first heard it.I thought I had my video camera on but I must of had it on stand-by instead of record. So I was not able to get it on tape. Do you know what could have made this sound? I have listen to recordings of all types of animals and birds and can not find anything that sounds like it. thanks, mary

Mary,
There are many websites with bird and animal sounds. Two of the best would be:
Macaulay Library from Cornell Lab of Ornithology
http://macaulaylibrary.org/index.do
National Geographic
http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/
The best way to do any indentification of an unknown sound is have a good quality sound recording and do a comparison to known sounds using one of several sound analyis editors.
