Troll Under The Bridge, Pt. 2

I am continuing to audio record underneath a bridge here in Central Illinois. My goal is to eventually record something chattering underneath this bridge as witnesses have heard. It is an exercise in patience as much as technology. For a background of this location and my first recording please see:

Troll Under The Bridge and a guest blog post Thoughts on “Troll Under The Bridge”

On the 28th of November 2010 my wife accompanied me to the bridge during the daytime to check on my gear. After being gone for about an hour the following sounds were recorded. It appears that there is a soft wood knock, followed by a loud metallic bang, I am guessing on the large steel culvert that empties very close to the bridge. And then there are a series of two sets of four wood knocks.

Was something in that large culvert while I was there earlier, YIKES?

How long is the bridge? Can you estimate the length of the stride of whoever is crossing it by how many footfalls it takes? Just a thought. Came across your site today. I am familiar with many night sounds; screaming cats, “who-cooks-for-you” barred owls and such. But, when I hear certain recordings of supposed sasquatches,. something about the sound is different, I can’t explain it, first, it makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck,. second, it comes from something big,. as there is just that deep gutteral quality to it. I also notice that dogs barking in the background get crazy and the pitch of their bark goes high, which I think means that they too are afraid. I know playing the one with the dogs and cows and such and then the deep sound,. my heeler was disturbed about it.

I do firmly believe that there are sqautaches out there and look forward to the new piece being aired Monday night on NatGeo. I will look around your great site when I have more time. Off to work for me.

    Keep hunting! Lindsay Michaels

At about the 4 second mark there is a sound that I would best describe as a quadruped running quickly across the bridge. Soon after crossing the bridge the neighbors Labrador Retriever dog starts barking. I measured the bridge, it is 195 feet long and 26 feet wide. If my estimation is correct the animal traveled that 195 feet in 4 seconds which calculates out as 35 miles per hour. I recorded both myself and my dog running over the concrete bridge and the recorder did not pick up our sounds.

I have noticed when I record with my Zoom H2 I get a heavier vibration making the subject walking sound heavier then it is when the recorder is closer to the ground.
I am no audio expert but my first thought on the first track was a dog running and panting but the “whack” then what sounds like a duck quacking had me baffled. The second track sounds more like a biped running quickly to one spot then running back and then the duck “squack” sound again then the noise a horse makes when exhaling.

    Hi Stan,
Just had a thought as I was listening to your recordings and the thought came to me that sasquatchs must really like things that make noise, big noise, such as banging on a culvert for its booming sound, for whatever reason…….would be fun to set up an old drum somewhere and see if it draws any attention…just a crazy thought…lololol

    Hi Kathy,

Good point, yes it appears that squatches do like to pound on things to make noise. I have several recordings that sounds like metal banging. You are right, I should place something like a drum out in the woods behind my house and see what happens.

    Stan

If you do place a drum out there, then the question begs about how many creatures would know what to do with a drum……certainly no deer, no dog, no coyote, no hog, etc……hummmmm, especialy in the dark, no human would be out there unless your neighbors are playing tricks on you?????

  7. Kathy VanMaren says:

You might be sorry…just like giving a child a drum set for Christmas and after a couple of hours wished you hadn’t….lololol

  8. Kathy VanMaren says:

An “oooogah” “ooogah” horn might be fun as well. Ok I will stop now……

  9. stancourtney says:

I have been thinking what to put out there, has to be plastic or heavy duty. Belle would really go crazy is they started honking a bulb horn.

Perhaps something as simple as an old galvanized wash tub or an old galvanized water tub the kind that farmers have in their fields to water cattle and horses. We used to have one and made a kids pool out of it. But they are big, maybe too big, and not easily picked up even by a sasquatch along with a big metal spoon…gosh Stan, you could be up all night with this….lololol

  11. Tom Daramus says:

You could go one further with the drum. Beat that thing for a while to make sure its heard, then see who might come to investigate this “new sound” in their territory.
