My Unknown Sounds
The purpose of this page is to allow feedback, comments and discussion. Recording
conditions in the field can be challenging. My situation is living near a sewage treatment
plant with its continuous hum. I wish that these files could be cleaned up with no hum,
background noise and other extraneous sounds. The answer is being closer to the animals
with better microphones and recorders.
For recommendations on sound equipment see the following page:

Because of the large numbers of the Illinois Howl being recorded I set up the following page for just the mp3's of the Illinois Howl, filtered and unfiltered. Illinois Howl mp3's

File #49 - 08.15.2008_02_Grunts
I camped in Colorado Friday the 15th of August,2008 at the same campground where I
heard Tahoe Screams in June of this year. I placed the microphone next to my
mirror on the driver's side and ran the mic cord inside the car and had the recorder
on the dash. I covered the little red light with a piece of paper so it hopefully
couldn't be seen. I fell asleep immediately and I had a rather restless night,
which is unusual for me.
1 - at 4 sec and 7 sec you hear me moaning in my sleep.
2 - at 23 sec you can hear the latches on my car door being tried.
3 - at 25 sec you hear a mumble or grumble from outside the car. This sound appears
to be very similar to some other sound clips I have heard. This is the first
recording I have of this type.
And now you know why I sleep in my car instead of a tent.
File #48 - 07.26.2008_02_Barks
This sound clip was just before daybreak on Sunday morning. There were a lot of sheep on
the hillside near our camp. At 5 sec. there is a loud vocalization I believe designed to
stir up the dogs and the flock. I can't really describe the sound, not a howl, just
strange. Then at 50 sec and 53 sec two words were spoken.
File #47 - 07.22.2008_01_Howls
The evening of Tuesday, the 22nd of July 2008 I was in Colorado. It was almost dark when I
arrived at the site on Tuesday evening. I was concerned about driving down the rutted
dirt road with my Toyota, not knowing for sure if I was at the correct location. So I drove
back down the road and slept in my car at a small gravel pit. These sounds were picked up
at 0330 a.m.

File #44 - 08.17.2007_filtered_woodknocks & a whistle
File #43 - 08.17.2007_unfiltered_woodknocks & a whistle

Another distant call. Coyotes are again heard joining in.
File #41 - 4.30.2007_howl.mp3

Comment received on the above two files - a Canada Goose single
File #27 - 12.01.2005 Call
This was recorded at 2 a.m. I really don't know what to make of this call, is it a bird or mammal?
File #26 - 11.19.2005 Sound 2
Recorder left overnight in a oak and hickory forest. It sounds like coyote pups and then a yelp.
File #25 - 11.19.2005 Sound 1
Oak and hickory forest. Sounds like feral hogs with an unknown whistle.
File #24 - 11.05.2005 Whoop

File #23 - 11.02.2005 Howls

the dogs chasing the truck
File #16 - 10.4.2005 Voice
Ten hours of recording for 2 seconds of a single call.
File #15 - 9.26.2005 Voice
A very strange sound, descending three notes. Comments received on the file - bigfoot, Barred Owl.
File #14 - 9.6.2005 Moan Howl
Another typical moan howl followed by dogs barking . Comment received on the file - Howl is a dog howling followed by a bark, repeated. Its probably
tied up and bored.
File #13 - 8.28.2005 Howls
Howls or calls are heard first and then the loud speaker from a church event in town followed by dogs barking.
File #12 - 8.27.2005 Call
I spent the night near Seneca, Illinois in my van and kept the microphone on the roof. I heard about fifty whistles and then the rock knocking. Several local hunters assure me that this is not a barred owl's call. After the call it does more rock knocking. Comment received on the file - a baby barred owl. Then theres another jr that responds to it?
File #11 - 8.25.2005 Voice
I definately have not heard anything that sounds like this before.
File #10 - 7.28.2005_Montana
My brother believes that he had a visit by a bigfoot while camping in Jul of 2004 in the Lewis and Clark National Forest in Montana. His unpublished report is in the database of the BFRO labelled as Likely Misinterpretation. BFRO Report 9339 non-public. My wife and I camped with them the summer of 2005 in the same campspot. We were the only campers. The third night this is what I recorded at 11 p.m. It is my opinion that it is a large biped walking past our two motorhomes. When my dog growled from inside the motor home the animal walked away. Even though I had the night-vision next to my bed, by time I got up and looked out the window the animal was gone.

File #07 - 7.9.2005 Voice 2 unfiltered
File #06 - 7.9.2005 Voice 2
File #05 - 7.9.2005 Voice 1 unfiltered
File #04 - 7.9.2005 Voice 1
These three sounds were all recorded within a five minute period at about 11 p.m. It took my wife and I several weeks to digest exactly what these sounds were. I certainly never would have believed that these animals were going up and down the creek behind my house.
File #03 - 6.25.2005 Owls & branches
This was recorded at 11 p.m. on a three man hike through the woods. Other than the barred owl calls there was definately some animal about 60 yards up the hill from us that kept breaking branches and walking back and forth.
File # 2 - 9.4.2004 Grunt - unfiltered
File # 1 - 9.4.2004 Grunt
These two grunts were recorded during the 2004 September BFRO New Mexico Expedition. Four of us were positioned above some canyons along a rock overlook. We heard woodknocking coming up the canyon and being answered back and forth. Five minutes later we heard an elk cow vocalize just in front of them and then silence. Five minutes later we heard these two grunts that left us with the impression that perhaps what we had heard was an elk hunt in progress. A noisey radio had inadvertantly gone off and given away our position. This was in an area where we had earlier in the day seen bigfoot prints, twisted trees, scat and bedding areas. The recording was taken from a Sony Camcorder.
